Romance Book Cover Design

If you're looking for a romance book cover designer, you probably have some queries about the process, things you should keep in mind, and what you should look for in a romance book cover design.

The book cover design process is relatively streamlined, and even beginner authors shouldn't be worried about it! When you decide to work with a professional, or buy a professionally designed premade book cover, your artist will take you through each step, often providing drafts and mock-ups throughout the custom design process, or offering minor tweaks on premade purchases.

It's important to know your genre well, and work with a designer who also understands the expectations of your readers. Book cover design trends change over time, and it's important to bear in mind that your book cover is your primary marketing asset - it has to meet reader expectations if you intend to sell copies of your book.

How much does a Romance book cover cost?

Like all genres, the cost of a romance book cover will vary depending on the quality of the cover, the artist making the design, and the complexity.

Most book cover designers, such as myself, will have transparent, easy to understand pricing for their cover design, so there won't be any shocks when it's time to pay your invoice. A custom made cover can cost anywhere between $100USD and over $1000USD, with most artists being somewhere in the middle (my custom eBook cover design sits at around $250, depending on the conversion rate at the time!).

Some artists will charge an extra fee for more expensive, bespoke stock, whereas others will factor it into the price.

If the cost of a custom book cover design is over your budget, then perhaps consider premade book cover designs. Premade book covers are a great way to snag professional, beautiful book covers for a fraction of the price that they'd usually sell for. The only downside is that you may be waiting a while for the 'just right' premade. Many artists will accept suggestions for premade covers, too. What should my Romance book cover look like?

Your book cover is the final touch on your finished manuscript, and it's important to get it right.

A good book cover combines elements of marketing and your very own novel to create something that is totally unique to you! Depending on your goals and ambitions for the project, it might be a good idea to leave the initial stages of the cover design process in your cover designer's hands - your artist probably knows how best to do their research into your genre, and most likely already has experience with the sub-genre you're working in.

That's not to say that you shouldn't have any say in your cover, though! A good designer will be able to take your ideas and weave them into the cover design, so people can see clearly what your book is about, as well as gain attention and conversions on the sale page.

Trends change often, and most designers will be able to point you in the right direction of what sells. For the romance genre in particular, each sub-genre offers new styles and trends to explore, from cartoon-like vectors to the aptly-named 'manchest' trend. If you've seen some covers that caught your eye, it's always a great idea to show them to your artist to make sure everyone is on the same page. Make sure that you get some creative input in the design process, and trust them to bring your ideas to life.
