Whether you're looking for a NaNoWriMo alternative or just looking to make a dent in your first draft, Story Craft is a great, community-driven method of getting your first draft done and dusted! Since the NaNoWriMo controversy and eventual closure, a lot of us have been looking for alternatives. Plenty have popped up, with different communities offering different rewards, engagement, and places to discuss your work. This year, I'm super excited to introduce Story Craft, which is happening in two parts! If you're not a Discord or Habitica user, we also have a forum - https://storycraft.coversbykristen.com/
October Prep Month
Unlike most other NaNoWriMo alternatives, we're hosting October prep month. This low stakes, chill month consists of weekly prompts posted on Instagram and Discord, where you can find a wealth of questions to help you develop your story, goodies to help you plan more efficiently, or, if you're a pantser, ideas to help you think about what you're going to write about in the following month.
Whilst prep month is part of the writing challenge, there are no rewards except for a swanky downloadable content bundle to help you with your project. If prep month doesn't sound like your thing, though, don't stress! It isn't mandatory to participate in October's events to take part in November.
November Writing Month
The real event is in November, just like many other events we've come to love! November is all about getting words down and chipping away at your draft with encouragement from the Story Craft community.
Whilst sharing your word counts and joining events are completely optional, you can win stickers and badges as well as customisable social media templates to help you promote your novel throughout the month. If you're participating via Instagram, you'll need to jump in the Discord server to claim your rewards.
To keep track, we're using Trackbear, a free and easy to use website that lets you track your word count over time. Like everything else, this isn't mandatory, but it's how we're tracking progress for rewards.
Write-ins and Writing Challenges
Story Craft is community focused, so we're holding virtual weekly write-ins over on Discord, and regular check-ins through Instagram, so there's something for everyone. Along with write-ins, we'll be sharing prompts and challenges to keep you on your toes and writing throughout the month.
Ready to Write?
If this sounds right up your street, then follow along on Instagram, or join the Habitica challenge to grab the Discord link. We just can't wait to write along with you!
